There are some places in the world, where you never want to leave. This island is for me such a place. Honest, I could still cry, because I am not there.
Rapa Nui (is the name from the aboriginals) is the most isolatied island of the world. It belongs to Chile and the continent is with 3800 km the next zivilisation. But no aboriginal feels like a Chilene. They live their own cultur, with their own language and the traditionen. Geologic it belongs to Polynesia and Tahiti is the next island after 4000 km.
The cultur of polynesia is more common here. They don't think like the european people. They don't think about the future, you don't know what's coming, so the future is in your back. The past is in the front of them, because you know what happened.
So, their life is very different. It don't makes sense to think about the future, because you never know what's coming. Maybe is good, because as we all know, plans always change.
When the european sailor came the first time, there were no plamtree or tall bush to see. But there were Stonefigures with big heads, a few with a red hat. The most of them were lying on the ground, other were standing. Around 100 aboriginal were living hardly from fishing and fruits.
In former times there were 10 000 to 15 000 people on the island. Through fights between them, slavery and epidemic, there were in the end just around 100 aboriginal left.
The culture here is very strong (nowadays there are about 4,000 residents here). The language, songs anddances are deeply rooted in everyday life. During the Tapati Festival you feel the culture the most. This we have experienced first hand.
The Tapati festival is the most important cultural event. The family clans and traditional groups are preparing for this the whole year. And then for two weeks they are painting bodies, making costumes, performed ritualsongs and dances. The highlight is the triathlon in the volcano crater, they doing banana boat padeling, swimming reed mats and a run with 20kg bananas on the shoulder. The women demonstrate cooking and storytelling ritual with cords.
In all competitions they collect points for one candidate and in the end the one with the most points, she will be the queen.

Most are 5 to 7 meters high, the smallest is 2 and the largest 21 meters. Why were theybuilt? this is unclear. Many theories: to deter sailors, for gods or ancestor veneration? maybe we will never know. Like so much more too. for example: how long it took to form a moai, how have they managed to transport the moais ...
Maybe all this questions makes the place so special and mystic. You can make up your own stories.

The story of the bird man for you at the end, so you can sleep well and dream about this mystic place. It was once the Makemake - the supreme god, creator of the earth, the sun, the moon and the people. Makemake rewarded the good, punishes the wicked, but also requires human sacrifice, and the bird man is the chief priest. You will be the bird man through a competition. The warriors of various tribes compete against each other on a small offshore island. The task was to find the egg of a swallow. participants climbed the almost perpendicular cliffs down to the sea, swam to the island, looked for the egg, put it in a basket, which they tied around the neck or head, swam back and climbed up the cliffs to the village. The man who arrived first, was bird man. He had now the power for one year. Then he decided who was sacrificed to Makemake - so far it is clear why the tribes competed fiercely with each other.
